John Larkin: $137K Complaint Against Merrill Lynch Advisor

A recent investor complaint against Westfield, New Jersey financial advisor John Larkin (CRD# 1144419) alleges that his conduct resulted in damages exceeding $100,000. Records provided by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority show that he is a broker and an investment advisor with Merrill Lynch, whose website describes him as a member of The Larkin Group.

Mr. Larkin’s BrokerCheck report discloses one investor complaint. Filed in August 2023, it alleges that as a representative of Merrill Lynch, he failed to follow instructions in August and September 2022. The pending complaint alleges damages of $137,038.36.

FINRA Rule 2010 stipulates that FINRA-registered brokers must “observe high standards of commercial honor and just and equitable principles of trade.” Various forms of unethical conduct, including the failure to follow a client’s directions, may be violations of FINRA Rule 2010, so long as the failures occur “in the conduct of [the member’s] business.” Financial advisors who fail to uphold this rule may be liable in the event of damages.

Merrill Lynch’s website describes Mr. Larkin as a member of The Larkin Group. The group’s webpage notes that its “wealth management approach is about using wealth to help turn goals into reality,” adding in a takes a personalized approach to working with its customers. “Whether it’s transferring wealth to the next generation, customizing your financial approach to help you pursue your passions, or providing advice and guidance to help you stay informed,” the profile describes, “we start by listening to learn more about you and your family.”

According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, John Larkin holds 40 years of securities industry experience. Based in Westfield, New Jersey, he has been a broker and an investment advisor with Merrill Lynch since 1983 and 2004, respectively. His credentials include the passage of four securities industry qualifying exams: the General Securities Representative Examination, or Series 7; the Securities Industry Essentials Examination, or SIE; the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination, or Series 63; and the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, or Series 65.
