Gene King: Easement Complaint Against Ex-Sequence Advisor

Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina financial advisor Gene King (CRD# 1542794) recently received an investor complaint alleging misconduct in connection with a conservation easement investment. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records show that he is registered as a broker with Exemplar Capital.

Mr. King’s BrokerCheck report discloses multiple four investor complaints. The most recent, filed in May 2024, alleges that as a representative of Sequence Financial Specialists, he represented conservation easements “as a reliable tax saving strategy” and provided assurances that they “offered the best of both worlds.” The pending complaint alleges unspecified damages.

A statement included with the pending complaint’s disclosure includes a defense of the firm and its representatives against the allegations. “Sequence [Financial Specialists] believes the claim is without merit or basis, as the investors were sophisticated and knowledgeable investors who attested to the fact that they were knowledgeable and experienced investors and could withstand the loss of their investment,” it states, “and following their investment in the offering, each of the investors also voted independently for the conservation easement, instead of the development option provided to them by the sponsor of the offering.”

According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Gene King holds 17 years of securities industry experience. Based in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, he has been registered as a broker with Exemplar Capital since February 2024. His past registrations include Sequence Financial Specialists (Charleston, South Carolina; 2015-2024), Securities America (La Vista, Nebraska; 1992-1997), Prudential-Bache Securities (New York, New York; 1987-1990), Dean Witter Reynolds (1986-1987), and the Stuart-James Company (1986-1986). His credentials include the passage of six securities industry qualifying exams: the General Securities Principal Examination, or Series 24; the General Securities Representative Examination, or Series 7; the National Commodity Futures Examination, or Series 3; the Limited Representative-Private Securities Offerings, or Series 82; the Securities Industry Essentials Examination, or SIE; and the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination, or Series 63. He is licensed in South Carolina. (Information current as of August 4, 2024.)
