Joseph Gibbons: Annuity Complaint Against Merrill Lynch Advisor

Wayzata, Minnesota financial advisor Joseph Gibbons (CRD# 1060467) allegedly recommended unsuitable investments, according to a recent investor complaint. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records show that he is registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Merrill Lynch.

Mr. Gibbons’ BrokerCheck report discloses two investor complaints. The most recent, filed in November 2024, alleges that as a representative of Merrill Lynch, he recommended unsuitable variable annuity investments between April 2011 and November 2024. The pending complaint alleges unspecified damages.

An earlier investor complaint, filed in 2008, similarly alleged that as a Merrill Lynch representative, he made unsuitable investment recommendations. The complaint alleged unspecified damages and was denied by the firm.

According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Joseph Gibbons holds 41 years of securities industry experience. Based in Wayzata, Minnesota, he has been registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Merrill Lynch since 2006. He was previously registered with Federated Securities from 1982 until 2005. His credentials include the passage of seven securities industry qualifying exams: the Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Principal Examination, or Series 26; the Securities Industry Essentials Examination, or SIE; the General Securities Representative Examination, or Series 7; the Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Representative Examination, or Series 6; the Direct Participation Programs Representative Examination, or Series 22; the Uniform Combined State Law Examination, or Series 66; and the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination, or Series 63.
